The Hermès Shooting Star Stamp: The Story Behind the Rare 'Étoile Filante' Bags

The Hermès Shooting Star Stamp: The Story Behind the Rare 'Étoile Filante' Bags

There is a little-known detail in the history of Hermès handbags that we at ReSee have always found particularly charming: the Shooting Star stamp (or Étoile Filante in French).

Positioned right beside the iconic "Hermès Paris Made in France" foil stamp, this small embossed star signifies a very special piece—a bag crafted by an artisan for their personal circle rather than for retail boutiques.

Crafted for Love, Not for Boutiques.

For decades, Hermès artisans were granted a unique privilege: once a year, they were allowed to purchase raw materials and handcraft one handbag for personal use on their own time. It might be for themselves, their wife, their mother, or another loved one. These custom Kelly, Birkin, or Constance bags were marked with a small shooting star, distinguishing them from those made for the boutiques.

Think about that for a moment. An artisan who spends his days making some of the finest handbags in the world is given the opportunity to make one for himself, or someone he loves. You can imagine the extraordinary care, leather selection, and precise hand-stitching (cousu main) that would go into it.

The Hermès Shooting Star tradition came to an end around 2014–2015, making these vintage bags an increasingly rare find and highly collectible piece on the vintage market.

Why We Love the 'Étoile Filante'

Interestingly, Shooting Star bags have not always been particularly sought after by Hermès purists. Some collectors have historically viewed them as a form of employee bag, and therefore less desirable than those originally sold through Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré.

We couldn't disagree more. For us, the Shooting Star is one of the most endearing and authentic chapters  in Hermès history. Here is a bag made by an artisan, not for a customer or a boutique, but for his own pleasure or that of someone close to him. There is something rather wonderful about that.

A true piece of craftsmanship, made with love.

A Note on Authenticity & Vintage Collecting

Because the production of Shooting Star bags was halted over a decade ago, finding a genuine Étoile Filante bag in brand-new condition today is a major red flag. True pieces show the natural, beautiful patina of a loved and worn object.

At ReSee, our in-house restoration and authentication experts inspect every physical detail—from the double back-stitch to hardware oxidation—to ensure every Shooting Star bag carries its genuine story forward.
